Dhul-Nun al-Misri

His full name is Abu Faid Thawban ibn Ibrahim. His father was Nubian from Upper Egypt, or allegedly from Akhmim. they also say that his father was a servant to someone from the tribe of Quraish. He died in 245 AH, and was so special in his knowledge, state, piety and politeness.

He was  setup for al-Motawakel and was sent to him from Egypt. When al-Mutawakel listened to his sermon, he burst into tears and sent him back respectfully to Egypt. After that, whenever saints were mentioned, al-Mutawakel used to burst into tears and sayThey only mention other saints because they do not know Dhul-Nun”.

He was a thin man with a red face and a not white beard. Dhul-Nun often said “Any speech should be about four topics: love for Allah, hate of doing less, following Qur'an and fear of distraction”. He also said “The sign of a true love for Allah is following prophet Mohammad in all his deeds, manners, orders and Sunna”.  He was once asked about who bad people are. He said “those who do not know the path of Allah and do not search for it”.

Salem Al-Maghraby once came into his session. He asked him about the reason of his repentance. Dhul-Nun replied “it is a weird reason, you can not understand”. Al-Maghraby insisted on telling him the reason. Dhul-Nun replied “I was on my way to some villages in Egypt. I slept in the desert. I opened my eyes to see a blind bird [grouse] which fell down from its nest to the earth. The earth was ripped apart and two jars came up. One contained sesame and the other water. It kept eating and drinking. Since that day, I repented and kept asking Allah for forgiveness until he accepted me”.

He also said “don’t allege knowledge or profess renunciation or adore worship! Escape from everything to Allah!”. He used to say: Every pretended is veiled by his pretense from witnessing the Truth, because the Truth is the witness for the people of truth that Allah is the Truth and His saying is the truth. Whoever has the Truth as his witness, will never need to pretend. So, pretense is the sign of being veiled from the Truth and the Peace

He said “In the past, the more scholars got knowledge, the more they got into renunciation and resenting the worldly life. They were spending money after knowledge. Nowadays, the more scholars get knowledge, the more they love and seek the worldly life. They are spending knowledge after money”.

He said “You seekers, if you honestly want the path, meet the scholars showing ignorance, the ascetics showing desire, and the knowledgeable with silence.”

Ashaq ibn Ibrahim Al-Sarkhasy, in Meccah, said “I hear Dhul-Nun saying, while he was driven to the executor all tied up and people crying over him, “This is a gift from Allah whose all deeds are sweet and good”. He added:

[You have a secured place in my heart     Whatever blame, I receive for you, is easy]

[I am determined to die for you            And if detained from you I cannot be patient]

He [AAH] died in Giza. He was carried in a boat in the river, because the bridge would have been broken by the crowd that followed him.  People saw green birds flying over his dead body to the grave.

Al-Abdal [Substitute-Saints]

Imam Ahmed has mentioned, in his Musnad, that Imam Ali [AHHF] was asked, while he was in Iraq, to curse the people of al-Sham [Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordon]. He replied that he heard prophet Mohammad saying (there are forty substitute-saints in al-Sham. When one dies, Allah replaces him by another one. For them, the rain falls, the victory over enemies is achieved, and the torture upon the people of al-Sham is removed). This was narrated by al-Seyoti, ibn 'Asaker.

Al-Hakim Al-Tormozy narrated, in his Nawader Al-Usol, that Abu Al-Darda’ said “prophets were the pillars of the earth. Since there are no more prophets, Allah has substituted them with some men from among the people of prophet Mohammad who are called “al-Abdal” [Substitute-saints]. They are not selected because of extra fasting, extra prayers or extra praising, but because of good manners, true devotion, good intentions, open hearts to all Muslims, and pure advice for the sake of Allah”. Ibn Abi Al-Donia, in his Al-Sakha, narrated that Al-Hassan Al-Basry said that prophet Mohammad said (the substitute-saints of my people do not go to Heaven because of extra fasting or prayers, but because of their open hearts and generous souls).

Abu Na’im, in Al-Halia, and Al-Tabrany, in Al-Kabir, narrated what Ibn Mas'oud stated that prophet Mohammad said: (There will always be some men from my people whose hearts are like the heart of Ibrahim [PBUH]. Thanks to them, Allah protects the people of the earth. They are called al-Abdal. They have not realized this rank because of prayers, fasting or charity, but by generosity and giving advice to Muslims).

Al-Tabrany, in Al-Awasat, stated that prophet Mohammad said (the earth will never run out of forty men like Ibrahim, the comrade of Allah. Thanks to them, water is sent and victory is achieved. If one dies, Allah replaces him with another one). Narrated also by Abu-al-Hassan al-Haythami.

Al-Khatib said, in the History of Baghdad, what Al-Kanany said “al-Noqaba' [the representatives] are 300, al-Nujaba’ [those people responsible for carrying the burdens of people] are seventy seven, al-'Umad [the pillars] are four and al-Ghoth [saviour] is one. al-Abdal's home is al-Sham. The chosen Abdal are forty. They are wanderers on earth. Al-'Umad are in the corners of the earth. The home of al-Ghoth is Meccah. If the public are in need, al-Noqaba' start praying, if not answered then al-Nujaba’ will pray, then al-Abdal, then al-'Umad, otherwise al-Ghoth will have to pray for it. Thanks to his prayer, common people get their need. Sahl ibn Abdullah al-Tasatury said “al-Abdal got their rank because of four things: sleeping less, eating less, talking less and isolation”.

Ma'rof al-Karkhy said “whoever says ‘O, Allah heal the people of Mohammad, relieve their sufferings and have mercy upon them’ ten times daily is written as one of al-Abdal”. We ask Allah, the Generous, to benefit us from the blessings of the good people and have mercy upon us in all our matters. Amen!
