Now has come unto you a Messenger

[Now hath come unto you a Messenger from amongst yourselves: it grieves him much that ye suffer: ardently anxious is he over you: to the Believers is he most kind and merciful * But if they turn away, Say: "(Allah) sufficeth me: there is no god but He: On Him is my trust,- He the Lord of the Throne Supreme!] At-Tawba 128-129

In this verse the part of [it grieves him much that ye should perish] could be interpreted in another way: He is precious to us, and it grieves him that you should perish.

Allah said the Arabs, Quraish or maybe all humans: [Now has come unto you a Messenger] Mohammad [PPBUH] [from amongst yourselves] i.e. from your own trip so as you are able to recognize him, his ancestry, his honesty, and his sincerity. Also for you to be able to understand his speech. In another interpretation: His is from you human kind.

Ibn Nashit read it in another way -with a different vocalization- that meant He is from your noblest. The Prophet [PPBUH] said: (Allah has chosen Kenanah from the sons of Ismail, Qurish from Kenanah, the sons of Hashim from Qurish, then He chose me from the sons of Hashim. So I am chosen from the best).

[it grieves him much] it means He suffers from His grieve [that you suffer] i.e. for your suffering, endurance of troubles for your religion and in the world as a whole. [ardently anxious is he over you] for your belief, you happiness, and you being in the best conditions. [to the Believers] from you and from all others [is he most kind (Ra'ouf) and merciful (Rahim)] i.e He is very much sympathetic with them. Allah described Him with the most intense quality of the two at first, as (Ra'ouf) is to be more merciful. Allah here gave the Prophet two of his names (Ra'ouf) and (Rahim).

[But if they turn away,] from believing in you after this gift that Allah has given them so that they became famous for it, [Say: "(Allah) sufficeth me] i.e. Allah will  suffice me the trouble. If You say that to them, Then Allah will handle on your behalf and will help you over them. So if they turn away,  all you need to do is ask for the help of Allah and relay on him and He will suffice you. [there is no god but He] So no one can be relayed upon but him. [On Him is my trust] so I do not hope or fear but him. [He the Lord of the Throne Supreme!] i.e. He is the Great King; the true one. He is the greatest body beyond, from him are all rulings and fates.

Obai said that these two verses were the last to come down. The Prophet said: (The Qur'an came down to me one verse by one and a letter by a letter except for the chapter -sura- of "Bara'ah" - at-Tawba - and of [Say He is Allah, the One and Only]. These two suras came down to me with seventy thousands lines of angles). Al-Baydawi said: These two verses where found with Khozima ibn Thabet, after the Qur'an was gathered, so they were added to it after all sahaba -companions- remembered and consented them.

The special meaning behind the words of this verse:

The inheritors of the Prophet [PPBUH], who call to Allah on His way, will have to get his manners; so that it would grieve them what happens the believers of hardships and troubles. They should make it easy for the believers and never be hard on them. They should love the of good all people. They should do their best to get this good to the people and have mercy pity for them. But, if these people turn away, they should dispense with them and relay on Allah and submit their whole matter to Him without regret or sorrow .

Al-Wartagbi said: the words of Allah [it grieves him much that ye suffer] means that it is very hard for the Prophet [PPBUH] to see our dissent to the truth, going after our inclinations, and abstaining from the Truth. Some said: It was hard for Him that we disagree and object.

Sahl said: It was hard for Him that you become inattentive to Allah even for a moment. He also said about Allah's words [But if they turn away...]; Allah is easing the pain and sorrow of His Prophet because of their relinquishment from following him while he is very keen to guide them to the right way. i.e. Allah will be sufficient for him from anyone other than Him.

Al-Qushairy said: Allah ordered him to call people for His oneness and uniqueness. Then He told him that if they abstain from answering him to be only by Allah. Allah said: [O, Prophet, Allah is you sufficiency], then He ordered him to say: [(Allah) suffices me]. The first one is referring to the high rank of the gathering while the second one is referring to him being divided, but he is still the whole gathering. i.e. Allah ordered him: [say, but you only say by us, for we take over from you, and you will be inside the gathering. So you are by us and you are wiped out from anyone else].
