As-Salam Aleekom Group,

However, I would like to inform you that I have completed the article that I was working on (Sufism, Nov 2009). Please update us with the required articles that need to be translated.

Dear members,

http://www.katinkahesselink.net/sufi/terminol.html

http://www.alislam.org/quran/search2/

These are two useful links I have made use of in my translation. The first is a translation of Sufi terms and the second is a website for Quran translation. Attached is a file of the terms I found useful so far. I will keep you updated. Can we have a sort of monitor who keeps it updated with all the terms gathered from all translator? I hope guys we cooperate in translation even by asking questions and suggesting translations. By the way, I will start in للمريد الصادق inshaa Allah

Best,

Nahed (posted 13 Feb 2010)

We wish to add another link for Quran translation because when you translate Quran you should not depend on just one site, sometimes they tend to be opinionated specially the Iranians. Here it is:

http://majdah.maktoob.com/vb/redirectLink.php?link=http://www.thenoblequran.com/

which is a very good translation page/site too, but, they tend to explain words in between brackets which is mostly not needed because it will be explained in the article itself. However, we can use their explanation whenever it is not explained within the article it self.

The Group (posted 13 Feb 2010)

This is a message from our brother Hassan Ralf after we sent him four revised articles to review from a western point of view:

Dear Group,

http://www.burhaniya.info/intranet/service/transcript_dictionary.pdf is the link to the Burhaniya Transcript Dictionary which can be accessed by anyone through http://www.burhaniya.info/intranet/I_serv_e.htm - it would be most helpful if the translators follow these guidelines for writing Arabic names and expressions in English! Of course I can assist, and we can even have training session if this would support the matter…

Other general remarks:

·  All articles should name the author (= the writer of a book, article, or other text), and the source of publication if being reused

·  If the article is compiled from several sources and/or put in a new format/frame etc. it should name this function by an editor (= a person who edits written material for publication)

·  If the article originally was contributed in another language it should also name the translator

In my opinion all four articles are fine for publishing in an English version of a Burhaniya magazine, provided there are some small changes:

·  Explanations of Qasaid etc. should not be presented as the ONLY possible interpretation but as one way of seeing it. For example “Now, we are going to explore what could be the beautiful meaning […]” instead of “Now, we are going to explore the beautiful meanings […]” (in “My Drink is Sweet”) or “we will find an answer” instead of “we will find the requested answer for this” (in “Blessings”)

·  The hoopoe story is very nice but a bit difficult to comprehend at the end: I recommend to put the joke and the explanations of the punishments (starting from “Elzamakhshary wrote in his book that…”) outside the main text as visible supplements; and some readers might not understand that Soliman actually forgave the hoopoe even before he told his reason for absence…

·  Correcting the English grammar and writing (there a few flaws, especially with punctuation) – I think it would be nice to have an English co-editor, i.e. some brother or sister professionally dealing with English (e.g. not me!) who reads everything again only for the language as the last step before publication

Hope this supports and encourages your marvelous effort in compiling Al Magalla and even open it to non-Arabic readers!

Shukran wa salam,

Hasan (posted 13 Feb 2010)

Dear Hassan

in behave of the members we thank you for the explaining and the links to the burhaniya transcriptions.

Noha (posted 13 Feb 2010)

Dear Noha

Please choose another one, other than Adam of Jan 2010, because it is already taken. You can take 'the position of Satan from Adam' (موقف إبليس من آدم) in 'Hal TaCalam' Feb 2010.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 13 Feb 2010)

Dear Members,

I just got an Idea about words that does not have some translation in English;

like "غيب الأحدية - وحدة الوجود - الحجب العشر". We can make it in the same manner like we do with books, giving the meaning of the words at the footpage as a numbered footnote, or we can make a link from the word to its meaning and the word will be written in Arabic by English letters like "Ghayb Al-Ahadeya" and then it will give you the meaning when you get the mouse over it.

I hope this idea can make it easier also for readers. I am waiting for your reply.

Thank you,

Ahmed (posted 13 Feb 2010)

Dear Ahmed

Thank you for the idea.

But, How to publish the meaning in Al Magalla is not the problem now, to get the right meaning is.

So we think that we should prepare the glossary and use it first and let the presentation be our next worry.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 13 Feb 2010)

All right I will do 'the position of Satan from Adam' in 'Hal TaCalam' Feb 2010.

Best regards,
Noha

Dear Noha

We appreciate your contribution and effort.

But you also need to be careful, as some of what is called Islamic sites do not support the Sufi understanding of Quran. We have checked the first site you mentioned and it seemed as to be giving a very plain translation, so, we will try to comment on the translation of these sites compared to each other.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 14 Feb 2010)

I have another idea. It is about translating the kasaid verses that refers to each section of Al Magalla which need to be fixed for all translators as a standard to each one of us.
It is like translating "أيها السائل عندي خبر" to "You who ask, I have news". So, it can make it easier for you and us to write the verse at the top of the translated article.
I hope that I explained my Idea clearly.

Inform me of any suggestions.

Thank you
,

Ahmed (posted 14 Feb 2010)

This is a very good idea.
You start it, and we will post it on this page for every one to review before we fix it.
You can do this in the mean time as you are revising you translations.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 14 Feb 2010)

Assalamu Alaykum  all,
I think its very useful to have such glossary. Moreover, I think the idea Mr. Ahmad brought us is brilliant. We have to transliterate some words and expressions that can not be rendered as is in English, and to link it to a proper paraphrase or interpretation.
I also have a suggestion concerning the title "التعلم من الصغر".
Either it may be "Learning at an early age"
or
"التعليم من الصغر"
Teaching children at an early age"
التعليم  modifies the teacher
التعلم modifies the learner

Best regards

Noha (posted 14 Feb 2010)

You are right, we think it is all about teaching because they will not learn by themselves. So, your 2nd choice will be much closer to the meaning. So please go with it, i.e.

"التعليم من الصغر"
"Teaching children at an early age"

Best regards,

The Group (posted 14 Feb 2010)

Dear Group,
Assalam Alykom,
Please revise the translation of the following Kasaid verses:

You who ask, I have news.                                                (أيها السائل عندي خبر)
Peace be on people communicated through us.     (سلام على قوم بنا قد تواصلوا)
My Loved ones study my words with each other.(يتدارس الأحباب فيما بينهم قولى)
Reveal to me every concealed secret.                   (واكشف لي عن كل سر مكتوم)
They are people with high status prestige.               (فهم أولو القدر الجليل السامي)
The interruptions about the dominant are four.          (القاطعات عن المهيمن أربع)
O worlds, be wise.                                                              (فلتعقلوا يا أيها الثقلان)
And some of the females held my banner.                  (وببعض أيديهن كان لوائي)
Narrated by glorified scholars.                                         (مما روا أماجد الأعلام)
Let it be known that Allah's people always do good deeds (فعل أهل الله خير لو علمتم)
It is Ahmed, stunning on 'one chord to two bows'
(هو أحمد في قاب قوسين انجلى)

The tribune of my grandfather is full of guidance.    (ومنبر جدى منبر ملؤه الهدى)

I am waiting for your revision.
Thank you, Regards
Ahmed

Dear Ahmed,

We made some alterations to your translations, if you do not mind.

Dear All,

Please give us your feedback.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 15 Feb 2010)

Dear Group,
It was so nice to make those altenations. It made the meaning easier and clear.
But in the translation of (هو أحمد في قاب قوسين انجلى)
I ask if it is right to start saying (It is Ahmed,..........) or (He is Ahmed,..............).
This is my only comment and many thanks to your efforts and patience.

Regards,
Ahmed
(posted 15 Feb 2010)

Dear Ahmed,

It is quit alright to say 'its' because it is not translation of words, it is translation of meaning.

So, "it" does not refer to Ahmed 'saw' himself, but refers to the statement that 'He 'saw' was stunning'.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 15 Feb 2010)

Thank you for this clearification.

Regards

Ahmed (posted 16 Feb 2010)

Dear All,
I was thinking about specifying a part from the main page that may contain something like "Today's Wisdom" and it will be updated everyday. We can put some advices from what we had read to Sayidi Fakhr Al-Din or other scholars, or we can put some wisdoms from different religious situations.
What do you think about this???
I am waiting for your reply....
Feed me back.

Best regards,
Ahmed
(posted 16 Feb 2010)

Dear Group,
I thought about splitting the website to Arabic pages and English ones, so, I made the index page as attached.

It is an Idea about avoiding mixing the Arabic with the English texts as it makes the reader get confused and feel uncomfortable. "Or this is my only point of view".

So, please find the attached file and tell me about it.

Waiting for your reply.

Thanks, Best Regards,

Ahmed (posted 17 Feb 2010)

Dear Ahmed,

The whole idea is to get every one to know about what the the others do.

Also the unification will spare us the duplication of the effort specially in the shared sections like the photos, art, news, condolences and congratulations. Since these sections are use common language and satisfy common need, but what needs to be separated will be separated of course.

So, the issues of AlMagalla with subjects that you are translating are separated.

We have just merged these sections after discussion with the European brothers about what we can do to make them feel equally comfortable.

Still, we think that you have an active creative mind and we do not want you to stop.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 17 Feb 2010)

Thanks for your reply, But I want to know if it is still acceptable to create a new design for the website with the same idea, yet a different design in the mean time or just to wait till you specify what will be separated???
Thanks for your advices.

Regards,
Ahmed
(posted 18 Feb 2010)

Yes, Ahmed.

You can keep creating. We will ISA give you feedback asap.

But, we have specified for you that the separation will be in the issues (editions) of Al Magalla itself.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 18 Feb 2010)

A useful word I like to add to the glossary is

’ديباج‘:  It means a valuable silk.

Best,
Nahed
(posted 18 Feb 2010)

Thank you, Dear Nahed.

We will be collecting the glossary soon.

N.B: please send me a copy of the final version after revision, as to learn from my mistakes and not to repeat them.

Dear Shayma,

Welcome to our group.

You can find all translated subjects above, so you may start with any subject that has not been translated yet from the first four monthly issues of AlMagalla.

The Group (posted 18 Feb 2010)

Dear Group,
Please revise this design and tell me about it.

Thanks,

Ahmed (posted 18 Feb 2010)

Dear Ahmed.

This is a very nice design that we maybe able to use.

Can you send us, the source photoshop file.

Best regards,

The Group (posted 18 Feb 2010)

Dear members
I will take care of translating the document "خُدعوا" for Jan 2010 if no one has done so already.

Thanks
Shayma

Dear Shayma,

You can find all translated subjects above, so you may start with any subject that has not been translated yet from the first four issues of AlMagalla.

However, we have 1st priorities:

تدارس - التراث - صحابة - النبى - هل تعلم - أهل الله

We also gave 2nd priorities:

خدعوا - المرأة

The idea is to the English readers their subjects of interest, not ours.

So, if you want to translate "خُدعوا",

you should translate the part about 'التبرك بالصالحين',

but not the part about 'عترتى أم سنتى'.

Thank you, and best regards,

The Group (posted 18 Feb 2010)

Dear Group,
I already attached the PSD files to the design in the compressed file. but I am going to send it again.
As for revising my translations, I was little busy but I am going to start soon.

Thank you,
Ahmed
